BASF donates $75,000 to Feeding America's National Produce Program

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, September 14, 2017 — BASF will join the fight against hunger with a $75,000 donation to Feeding America’s National Produce Program. In addition, the company’s North American Crop Protection employees in the U.S. will host a virtual food drive throughout the month of September to support local food banks during Hunger Action Month.

Feeding America established the National Produce Program to increase the organization’s capacity to handle fresh foods. The program provides healthy and nutrient-rich foods to those who are in need, particularly in rural areas where fresh produce is not as abundant. On average, the program distributes over two million pounds of fresh produce each week to its network of food banks.

“One in eight people and one in six children struggle with hunger across the U.S.,” said Paul Rea, Senior Vice President, BASF Crop Protection North America. “That’s one too many. This donation will help families receive the healthy meals they need. BASF is committed to partnering with organizations like Feeding America to find solutions that eliminate hunger and its root causes.”

To help support the company’s hunger relief efforts, BASF employees throughout its Crop Protection division will participate in a virtual food drive, by making financial contributions online. All funds raised online will be donated to Feeding America food banks based on donor zip codes. This gives employee donors the opportunity to help their own communities and make an impact where they live. BASF invites the community to participate in the drive and make donations at  www.feedingamerica.org/basf.

In addition, some BASF sites will conduct food drives while other employees will volunteer at food banks throughout the country, to assist with sorting and bagging food.

“While BASF is actively supporting the Hurricane Harvey disaster relief efforts, we recognize that there is still a great need in our communities throughout the country every day,” said Amy Baldwin, Community Relations Manager, BASF Crop Protection North America. “We’re taking action, and we encourage others to join our efforts and make a contribution to Feeding America. No child or adult should suffer from hunger.”

BASF’s Research Triangle Park site will conclude its local efforts during Hunger Action Month with a garden dedication at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina on September 28. The teaching and demonstration garden, co-sponsored by BASF, will provide educational opportunities as well as fresh produce for the Food Bank and its partner agencies.
