What herbicides are used in canola crops?

Liberty® ULTRA herbicide, powered by Glu-L technology, delivers post-emergence control of tough, hard-to-manage weeds like kochia, common lambsquarters and pigweed species, with 20% better control than generic glufosinate on 3-4" weeds.1

 

At the end of the season, Sharpen® herbicide steps in as a premier harvest aid for crop desiccation2  and drydown or late-season weed control. 

When should I apply Liberty ULTRA and Sharpen herbicides?

  • Apply Liberty ULTRA herbicide on LibertyLink® canola from the cotyledon stage through early bolting while weeds are under 3 inches and actively growing. A second application 10 to 14 days later can help manage weed flushes before canopy closure.
  •  Apply Sharpen herbicide as the crop reaches physiological maturity for crop desiccation2 and uniform drydown. Target timing when seeds in the middle pods have turned brown to black and allow up to 10 days before harvest. Every Sharpen herbicide application requires MSO and AMS for optimum desiccation.2

What are the most important diseases to manage in canola crops?

Common canola diseases include white mold, blackleg and verticillium stripe. These diseases can affect canola at different points in the season and may reduce yield potential if not managed proactively.

 

Regular scouting and a proactive disease management plan can help farmers identify risks early and protect yield potential throughout the season. Each disease presents itself differently and impacts canola at specific stages of growth, making it important to note how and when they develop.

 

  • White mold, or sclerotinia stem rot, develops during flowering when warm, humid conditions allow infected petals to spread disease through the canopy. Through apothecia, spores are released that infect fallen flower petals on the plant. The infection then moves into stems, pods and other plant tissues, leading to the development of white mold symptoms. 
  • Blackleg can appear early as leaf lesions before progressing to stem cankers that weaken plants and reduce yield. It often persists in fields with tight canola rotations because the disease survives on infected stubble.
  • Verticillium stripe is an emerging concern in some canola-growing regions. Symptoms typically appear later in the season as dark striping on stems and premature ripening, which can reduce yield and complicate harvest.

How do I manage blackleg disease in canola crops?

Blackleg is one of canola's most damaging diseases, showing up in more than 50% of canola fields surveyed across Canada and the U.S. each year.3 When severe infection takes hold, it can cut yield by as much as 50%, making blackleg one of the costliest preventable losses on canola acres.3
