Regent® 4 SC Insecticide
To maximize yield, Regent insecticide should be your early-season choice for proven wireworm control. Not only does the power of Regent protect your potato crops longer into the season, it also results in plants that are stronger and healthier than plants treated with standard insecticides. And that means just one thing: higher yield potential.

Q: What are the benefits of using Regent® 4SC?
A: Regent® 4SC offers the flexibility of mixing directly with water or into in-furrow, liquid pop-up fertilizers or micronutrient products. By adding agitation to existing fertilizer equipment that many growers already use, growers can experience the advantages of Regent 4SC that other growers who have previously used the 1-PASS™ Application Systems have already experienced: low-dose rate, ease of handling, central fill and accuracy. Regent 4SC also works well when using direct injection equipment to direct a Regent and water mixture into liquid fertilizer. Field observations with Regent 4SC mixed directly in water or liquid fertilizer indicate good mixing and suspension properties. Regent 4SC offers growers low-dose convenience-one container with 104 fluid ounces will treat 25 acres (based on 30-inch rows). Just mix 4.16 fluid ounces per acre in a minimum of 1 gallon of water or in-furrow, liquid fertilizer, and avoid the hassles of granular products that require up to 8.7 pounds of product per acre.
Q: Why should I change my current granular system over to a liquid system, like the Regent® 1-PASS™ Application System?
A: A liquid system offers several benefits you just can't get with a granular insecticide system: The low-dose, liquid Regent® application system means no hauling around heavy, bulky granular bags or Lock’n Load® containers. There are no insecticide boxes to fill with a liquid system, which means there's significantly less risk of worker exposure. Central filling means just one tank to fill, eliminating the hassles associated with refilling granular boxes. The liquid system is easier and faster to calibrate than a granular system. 1-PASS™ Systems are equipped with a REDBALL® or FASTBALL® flow monitor, which allows the operator to observe application uniformity. With most granular boxes, you don't know there is an application uniformity problem until it's time to refill the boxes. The 1-PASS System allows you to readjust the application system for tractor speeds right from the cab. The use of microtubes for metering provides dependable, accurate calibration. With Regent, you'll clean the tank just like any other sprayer tank. It's that simple. You have the option to direct inject Regent into existing in-furrow, liquid fertilizer application systems. You may also mix Regent 4SC directly with liquid, in-furrow fertilizer provided the fertilizer tanks are properly agitated. Agitation kits are available from REDBALL and RHS, Inc.
Q: How do I prevent Regent® 4SC from freezing?
A: To prevent freezing of Regent® 4SC or to depress the freezing point, add 10% by volume of liquid fertilizer to Regent 4SC plus water. The freezing points are as follows: Regent 4SC + water = 32° F Regent 4SC + water + 10-34-O = 14° to 23° F.
Q: How is Regent® 4SC packaged?
A: Regent® is packaged in easy-to-handle, 104 fluid ounce plastic containers. Each container holds enough product to treat 25 acres (based on 30" row spacing). There are four containers and a measuring device in each case, and 12 cases comprise a pallet that treats 1,200 to 1,600 acres.
Q: What exactly is Regent®?
A: Regent® belongs to a structurally unique family of chemistry known as phenylpyrazols. The active ingredient in Regent is fipronil.
Q: What mode of action does Regent® use?
A: Like most insecticides, Regent® acts on the central nervous system of insects. Specifically, it interferes with the passage of chloride ions passing through the gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) regulated chloride channel in the central nervous system. This is different from the way that pyrethroids, organophosphates or carbamates work. With Regent, the interference with the GABA receptor kills the insect. Regent is highly effective against target pests at very low doses-4.16 fluid ounces per acre (based on 30-inch rows). It is a contact and ingestion insecticide. The method of kill varies with the target pest and method of application. For the specific method of activity Regent utilizes to control a broad spectrum of pests, consult the following chart.
Important Notice:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has advised BASF that its conditional registration for REGENT® 4SC for in-furrow corn application in the U.S. marketplace was allowed to expire on November 15, 2009. This decision does not affect the U.S. registration of REGENT 4SC for potato applications – REGENT 4SC remains authorized for use in potatoes with an unconditional registration.
The EPA allowed the expiration of the conditional registrations for REGENT 4SC for in-furrow corn applications because it felt a number of viable alternatives exist for treating corn furrows for rootworm control.
BASF will continue to manufacture REGENT 4SC for in-furrow use on potatoes only.
U.S. distributors and retailers can sell – and growers can use – REGENT 4SC labeled for corn in-furrow application until their stocks are depleted.
Any inquiries regarding REGENT 4SC not answered by the above should be directed to your BASF Sales Representative.
